Byzantine Weaving Residency – Greece, 2023

Culture Moves Europe – Goethe-Institut

In 2023, I was selected to do a residency in Greece through the Culture Moves Europe programme, funded by the Goethe-Institut. Over the course of 18 days, the journey unfolded across three regions, each offering a distinct layer of textile heritage, community, and contemporary exchange.

The first week took place in the village of Geraki, where I immersed myself in learning the Byzantine tapestry technique with Chrysoula Stamatopoulou on their school . I also shared my own path as an artisan-entrepreneur by giving a talk to the local weaving community on the challenges and possibilities of sustaining a craft-based business today.

Kalamata where I visite the city’s exceptional museum—Victoria Karelias Collection one of the most complete collections of Greek local costumes that continues to inspire me.

The final week was spent in Athens, where I connected with three young weavers. Together, we exchanged knowledge, weaving practices, and business strategies, building a network of mutual support between contemporary textile artists.

This residency deepened my commitment to dialogue, tradition, and innovation—where weaving becomes both a cultural bridge and a creative practice.
